This week (11/28 - 12/1) :
Reading: We are continuing our unit in analyzing text structure. I am reading aloud the novel, Tuck Everlasting, and students will stop and ask questions as we read, as well as analyze the characters, setting, and plot of the story. This novel will take 4 weeks to complete. Students are working on building reading stamina during Reading Workshop and managing their time wisely.
Writing: We have begun our informational writing unit. Students chose from three ancient civilizations to research- the Mayas, Aztecs or Incas. They are currently working on organizing their information into categories, which will become pages in their books. This unit will take us up to Christmas break.
Math: We are continuing Chapter 2 in Math, which is Whole Number Multiplication and Division. Students will multiply and divide by tens, hundreds, and thousands, multiply and divide by 2-digit numbers, and learn about the order of operations when solving multi-step problems. Our daily Number Talks are under way, and students are loving them! Students are required to use mental math to solve problems and then participate in a whole-class discussion about different strategies used to solve those problems. This teaches students how to work flexibly with numbers and deepens number sense.
Science: We are continuing our unit on Ecosystems. Students will learn about extinction and how it affects ecosystems.
Social Studies: We are beginning a unit on government. We will explore four different types of government structures- monarchies, dictatorships, democracies, and republics.
